(*) Position of canton on a patch is determined by wearer's purpose. Most law enforcement and citizens wear a patch with the canton (blue field with stars) to viewer's left as if peacefully flying. Most armed forces wear a patch with canton to viewers right as if flag was flying as the armed forces advance in battle. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule.
